This too shall pass script on upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows black script lettering reading This too shall pass, running diagonally across the upper chest near the shoulder. The linework is thin and even, with the flowing letterforms filled in solid black ink on skin. The background is a dark, low-cut top and a pale wall, and the photo is taken from the side with the person's face out of frame.

Dear Mr Okafor,

I have finally finished the last of the Harbour Street fascia, the one you said I would never manage without a ladder and a prayer. The gold leaf went on this morning in the thin grey light off the estuary, and I stood back from it the way you taught me, squinting, looking for the wobble in the tail of the letters. There isn't one. Every stroke runs true from the first capital to the final flourish.

Mrs Pardoe came down to see it before the shop opened and read the words aloud, then asked whether I had chosen them myself. I told her they were your sort of thing, the kind of line you would scratch on the back of a mahl stick to keep yourself honest. She laughed and said her husband used to say the same, usually when the rent was late.

Your old brushes are in the tin on my bench. I have kept the sable one with the bent ferrule. Some mornings the paint refuses to flow and I curse the damp, and then I hear you telling me that this too shall pass, usually while you were already reaching for the turpentine.

I will write again when the window is dry. Tell the lads at the yard the sign is up, and tell them I am not sorry about the ladder.

Yours, Tomasz
