Dear Ines, the mail drone finally reached the seawall station, so you'll have this before the gulls get into the relay again. I spent the whole shift on the Hollis shelf, where the old paper has gone the colour of weak tea. Inside a tin marked for the 2060 inventory I found a card in a looping hand. Two lines, and the second dropped a finger's width to the right, as if the writer had run out of room: There's faith / in love.

I know what the committee will say. Nobody wants sentiment on a salvage manifest. But the card had been folded into a quarter and pressed flat for so long that the crease had become a second hinge, and the ink had bled only where the pen pressed hardest, on the word faith. Someone had been careful with it. Someone had carried it somewhere they did not want to lose it.

I took it to Oren, who reads old scripts better than any of us. He said the lettering was taught by hand in a school that no longer exists, the sort where the teacher stood behind you and tapped your wrist until the loops came right. He thinks the writer was young, or copying something she had seen painted on a wall. Either way, she wanted the words to outlast the paper.

I've decided to keep the card out of the manifest. Tell Dad the tin was empty. Tell him the sea is calm and I eat properly. And if you ever meet anyone who writes like that, ask them what they believed in before they decided it was love.
