Cartoon fox in green hat flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A drawing of a cartoon fox wearing a green hat with a red feather, shown in profile inside a yellow oval frame. Bold black outlines and flat orange, white and green fills with soft pink shading behind the head give it a classic old-school look. A red poppy and green leaves sit beneath the oval, with a line of black lettering along the bottom, all on a cream background presented as a poster mockup.

The barrel organ at the top of Market Street had been playing the same jaunty tune since nine, and Hettie Marsh had stopped hearing it by ten. She was counting pennies into a tin when she noticed the hat was gone from the second shelf, the green felt one with the red feather her husband had bought in Scarborough the summer before he died. Only a flattened patch of velvet remained, and a line of small dusty pawprints leading out under the awning.

Her nephew Ray, who painted signs for the council and considered himself a man of letters, came over wiping his brushes. "Foxes don't wear hats, Aunt Het." "This one does," she said, and pointed. Across the cobbles, by the fountain, a red fox sat upright on the bench beside the organ grinder, the feather jutting at a cheeky angle, one ear cocked to the music. It was watching her the way a bank manager watches a late payer.
They crossed the square together, Ray's paint tin knocking against his knee. The fox rose, stretched, and trotted off between the coconut stall and the tombola, not hurrying, stopping only to glance back. Hettie followed it past the bunting and the bandstand, up the lane to the old mill where the stream ran cold and the grass grew tall enough to hide anything.
At the mill wall the fox stopped, lifted the hat with one neat paw, and set it on a flat stone for her. Then it was gone. Ray said the creature was probably half-starved and looking for chips. Hettie picked up the hat, shook it out, and found a walnut shell tucked inside the band. She laughed until she had to sit on the step, humming the three words the organ man had been bellowing all morning.
