Wolf head and rose flash design

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A drawn tattoo design showing a snarling wolf head in profile, with open jaws, bared teeth and a red-rimmed eye. A shaded rose with pink petals and grey leaves sits beneath it. The wolf is rendered in bold black outlines with grey shading, while the rose uses soft red and pink tones, all centred on a plain white background.

The snow had been coming down since Tuesday, and by the third night the road past the ferry turn was gone under it. Mrs Hollis had sent word that the coach would not come, so it was only me, the cook, and the two Dutch surveyors in room four, who stopped their card game to listen when the wolf started up on the ridge.

It was not a howl so much as a cough, low and wet, like something with a sore jaw. My father had trained a rose up the south wall of the inn, the only thing he ever grew that the frost did not kill, and each November he cut the last bloom and pressed it between the pages of the bar ledger. The cook swore the wolf wanted that rose. The surveyors laughed into their ale. I took the lamp out anyway.

It was sitting at the edge of the yard, grey as the drifts, its mouth open and the light catching in one red-rimmed eye. Caught in its teeth was the last bloom, dark and bruised, the petals already going to rust. It did not come closer. It set the stem down in the snow by my boots, then turned and walked back up the ridge without once looking round, the way a man leaves a debt he has finally settled.

In the morning the bush was stripped to thorn and the ledger had one page with a pressed petal missing. The surveyors called it frost and went down the valley on foot. I left the south wall bare that winter, and when the thaw came, the bush put out a single new rose, and I left that one where the ridge could see it.
