Sit down and stop fidgeting, the lot of you, because I'm only telling this once and the tea's going cold. Forty years back I was third mate on the Gannet Rose, out of Liverpool with coal for Singapore, and we had a cat aboard called Mrs Pim. She was a small white thing with a red bow tied behind her ears, and the cook's boy swore she'd come up the gangway in a crate of tinned peaches and never once set foot ashore since.

The bosun was a Welshman named Dai Corran, arms like hawsers, with a heart inked on his forearm he'd had done in Cardiff at nineteen. A pale ribbon ran across it with lettering nobody could read any more, and the pink had faded to salmon. Of an evening he'd sit on the hatch cover splicing rope, and Mrs Pim would climb up and settle right on that heart, paws tucked under, looking at him as if he owed her money.
Off the Horn we lost the main truck in a squall, and Dai went up in the bosun's chair with the sea trying to shake him loose. Halfway up he stopped. The rope was singing and he could see the cat on the forecastle head below, sitting bolt upright, watching him with that small, serious face. He told me later he'd not come down until she looked pleased. I called it foolishness. He got the truck bolted on regardless, and when he climbed down she was waiting at the foot of the ladder, washing her face as if none of it had happened.
We made Singapore eleven weeks later. Dai went down the gangway with a tin of pilchards under one arm, and the ribbon on his arm had gone bright again in the sun, though I've never been able to prove it. Mrs Pim stayed aboard, cats don't care for cities. So that's the yarn. Believe the bits you like and buy me a drink for the rest.
