Cartoon goldfish with sparkles

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A large-eyed cartoon goldfish faces forward with its fins and tail spread, surrounded by four-pointed sparkles, small bubbles and green seaweed. The drawing uses bold dark outlines, soft coloured pencil shading in orange, yellow and pale blue, and grey shading on the eyes and scales. The fish fills the centre of the page on a plain background, with the blue water tones fading out around its edges.

The goldfish in the glass bowl on Mrs Tallow's windowsill had been wishing for a bigger bowl since the spring, and everyone in the house knew it, because he said so at breakfast, at tea and most nights through the floorboards. His name was Bartholomew Pip and he had large, astonished eyes that he could not stop being astonished with. The bowl was round and the window was small, and beyond it was the wide grey river where the gulls argued over chips.

One Tuesday a drop of rain ran down the glass and stopped in the middle of the pane, and Bartholomew saw it wobble and thought it was the most beautiful thing that had ever happened. He told the drop so. The drop, which was called Gwen by the cat, did not answer, because drops do not, but it gathered a little more water from the sill and grew fat and bright and it slid sideways and down, out of the bowl's shadow, and came to rest on his fin like a sparkle that had decided to stay.

That night he dreamed of a sea with no edges, and when he woke the bowl was full of small silver bubbles that had come up from nowhere, and the window had been left open a crack. Mrs Tallow found an empty bowl on the sill in the morning, and a wet fish-shaped trail across the floorboards toward the river, and a single sequin of blue light stuck to the glass where he had been. She sat down on the step and laughed until the kettle boiled over.
