Cartoon hunter and thought bubble on lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A thought bubble above a cartoon figure of a hunter in a cap, holding a long gun, with the words I know your in der Wabbit written inside the bubble. The linework is thin and sketchy, rendered in black and grey with light shading on the hunter's clothing, and the design sits on bare skin with a waistband visible along the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every October for thirty-one years I have climbed Carrick Gap before first light with my late father's double-barrelled gun and a flask of stewed tea, and every October the same grey rabbit has been sitting on the drystone wall above the sheep fold, grinning at me like a bank manager who has seen my overdraft.

This year I had a plan. Old Mr Pringle at the feed shop swore rabbits can't read, so I wrote my usual boast on the back of a sack receipt and tucked it into my cap where he couldn't see it: I know where you are, you wily article. Then I walked the scree in complete silence, which took the better part of an hour and cost me two good socks and a fair bit of dignity.

At the top the mist lifted off the pass like a dust sheet pulled off furniture. There he was on the wall, one ear bent by the wind, and for the first time in three decades I watched him move his mouth. Words rose above his head in a small grey cloud, neat as a shop sign: You're late, Walter. You've been talking since Thursday.

I looked down at my own cap, and the receipt was gone. Above my head a second cloud had been forming all the way up the hill, and it held every word I had ever said aloud on that mountain, pressed into the mist like print. The rabbit tipped his hat to me and went back over the wall, and I stood there a long while with the empty gun, reading my own thoughts.
