Lyric line tattoo along the side of the waist

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a close view of a bare side torso with the words 'In the sun I feel as one' tattooed in black serif lettering that runs diagonally across the skin, with the final words partly cropped by the frame. A smaller black tattoo is visible on the forearm at the top right, though its design is hard to make out. The image is in warm, natural tones with the skin and black ink as the main colours, and the composition is cropped tightly around the body.

Eleven days out of Falmouth, and the bosun still chalked the hatch numbers every morning as though the sea might rub them off in the night. Dora Kemble carried his coffee up the ladder two-handed, the tin mug knocking against her knuckles, and found him squinting at a horizon of grey water and low cloud.

"Wind's backing," he said, taking the mug without thanks, which she had learned meant he liked it. She had signed on as cook's mate because the advertisement promised a long passage and asked no questions about where she was going afterwards. Nobody aboard asked. They asked instead whether she could make porridge without scorching it, and whether she knew the old song about the Gulf Stream. She did not, but she was learning.

The song was not really the point. In the galley locker, under a tin of dried apricots, she had found a page torn from a ship's log, and on it someone had written in pencil: In the sun I feel as one. Below that, in a different hand, a list of ports had been crossed off one by one, Lisbon, Recife, Montevideo, until only a blank line remained at the bottom. She had not told anyone she had found it. She had only copied the words onto the slate by the stove, where the cook before her had kept the day's menu.

At noon the cloud tore open and the sun came down flat across the deck. The watch climbed up from below one at a time, wiping their hands on their trousers, and stood in the warmth with their eyes shut. Dora stayed at the rail with the empty mug. The bosun, who had never once said a kind word to her, drew a line through yesterday's chalk numbers and wrote the date beside them instead.
