The hall smells of squash and floor polish, and somebody has pinned the Year Six class photo to the noticeboard upside down. You find your own face near the bottom corner, squinting, with a name written in biro beside it that is not yours. Before you can correct it, Dawn Pickering is at your elbow with a paper plate of vol-au-vents and the news that Mr Ackroyd still keeps your penguin.

Your penguin was the one you drew in the back of Geography, term after term: a round, sulky bird with huge brown eyes and a pink flower tucked behind one ear, because you had decided penguins needed a reason to be cheerful. Snowflakes everywhere, because the rest of the class had written about Antarctica and you had only ever wanted to draw the weather. Dawn says he was framed. You say that is impossible. She says he is behind the tea urn, which is where every important thing in this building has ended up.

You find him there under a tea towel, the glass speckled with dust and one corner lifting. The penguin looks back at you exactly as he did at eleven, unbothered by the decades. Someone has added a note on the card behind him in careful pencil: Still the best thing in the classroom. You stand there longer than the tea needs, reading it twice, until the kettle clicks off and the room goes quiet enough to hear the radiator ticking like something trying to remember a joke.
