Owl and blossom branch on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded owl with large round eyes sits on a black branch that curves across the upper arm and shoulder. Pink blossoms with soft shading surround the owl and branch, framing it against the skin. Bold black outlines define the branch and owl, and the composition fills the upper arm with the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been counting the owls since Lent, and by April there were only two. The big one lived in the blackthorn behind Harrow Lane, a ragged hunter with a torn wing. The other, smaller and paler, roosted in the old cherry at the edge of Clay Wood, where the village ended and the trees began. Nobody else in Sawley had bothered to notice the difference. Her grandfather had taught her that a bird's eyes told you more than its song, and this one kept its round, startled stare fixed on the lane as if it expected the postman to be a fox.

She carried the lantern down on the third night of frost, when the blossom had come early and the petals lay on the path like spilt paper. The owl did not move when she reached the trunk. Its branch bent low over the wall, black as a wet rope, and the flowers pushed out of every knot in it, pale pink at the edge and deeper where the light fell. She set the lantern on the stone and waited, the way her grandfather had waited for her to make up her mind when she was small.

It was a rustle that told her. Something had caught in the wire fence below, a leveret kicking its back legs against the frost. The owl dropped without a sound, and by the time Nell had pulled off her gloves it was already back on the branch, the leveret gone and a single feather turning slowly down through the lantern light. She stood there a long while, breathing white into the cold. Then she picked up the lantern and went home, leaving the gate open for the bird.
