Nobody had warned Pip that the beach would be so wide when you were the size of a biscuit. The sand burned her flippers and the gulls kept circling lower, and by the time her brothers and sisters had scrambled past the seaweed line, she was alone, a dark speck on a beach the colour of porridge. His name was Harold, or so he said, and he wore a whelk shell with a chip in its lip like a pirate wears a patch. He did not have time to be kind, he said, but he had time to be bossy. "Left, left, the water is left," he clacked, and he pushed her with one pincer while the gull above them muttered about small, slow things and what they tasted like. Pip pushed back with all four flippers, which was the only argument she had ever been good at.

The first wave hit her chest and rolled her over, cold and bright and far louder than she had imagined. When she came up, spluttering, the sea was suddenly enormous and full of hands that did not want to hold her. She looked back once. Harold stood on the sand with his shell tilted up, watching her go, and she thought he might be waving, or he might just be cleaning his claw.

Years later she would glide over a bed of kelp, chasing a silver shoal through the green light, and she would not remember the gull or the crab at all. She would only remember the shock of that first wave and the strange feeling, as she dived, that the sea had been waiting for her all along.
