Hettie broke the skin of ice on the cattle trough before first light, the spade handle jarring up through her wrists. The lower meadow had been under water since November, and it had stayed, flat and grey, lapping at the drove hedge as if it had made up its mind to stay.

Her grandfather said the dyke ran straight to the sea at Salthouse, and that in the year of the big tide a dolphin had come up it, leaping the sluice gate in one bound and landing in the calf pen with its tail slapping the straw. Nobody believed him. But the shape was still burnt into the cart-shed door where the lamp had hung, a curve of black with a flick at the bottom, and every winter he traced it with his thumb before he went out to feed.

This morning the ice on the meadow had cracked into plates, and Hettie walked out along the hedge with the torch. The water was black beneath the broken light. She stopped where the flood-line met the ditch, and something moved below the surface, a long back rising and turning, then a spray of cold water across her boots that she did not step away from.

She went back to the house and told nobody. At the cart-shed she held the torch to the door and found the mark still there, its edges softened by years of rain, and she thought about how far the sea was, and how a thing could still come up a dyke if it wanted to badly enough.
