The net came up over the gunwale at first light, heavy as a wet coat, and Ada Lusk saw the frog before anyone else did. It was wedged in the mesh near the cork line, arms thrown up above its head as though it had been caught mid-argument and intended to win.

'Leave it,' her son said from the wheel. 'It'll be dead by the time we're in.' Ada was already working her thumbnail under the twine. A knot had caught one back foot, and the frog did not struggle. It only watched her with the flat patience of something that had been in worse nets. When the last loop gave, she held it up, and the lamp on the mast caught the pale stripe running down its back, bright as a wake.
She carried it to the stern rail rather than the side. Behind them the harbour wall was grey with gulls and the sky was the colour of pewter. 'Not the sea,' she said. 'Too much salt for a thing like that. Put it in the reeds at the Tallow Pool.' Tom laughed, then stopped, because the crew had gone quiet and the older hands were looking at each other the way men do when a sign has come in with the catch.
They landed at ten with eleven crates of herring. Ada walked the long way home along the dyke, past the sheds where the nets hung like dark lace, and on the path to the Tallow Pool something moved in the grass ahead of her. It was small and green. It paused, arms lifted, then leapt towards the water in one clean spring, and she stood there with her hands full of nothing and waited for the ripples to settle.
