You will not believe what has come aboard the Helen Marr at Rotterdam. Nobody can tell me where it came from. It arrived in a crate of Dutch onions, climbed out during the second night watch, and has been living in my dry store ever since, mostly on digestives. The captain says it is a ship's mascot now and the bosun has painted its name on the hatch. I call it Gordon, because it looks like a Gordon.

The trouble is that Gordon will not come down for anything under a chocolate chip cookie. I tried oatcakes. I tried the good shortbread from the tin Mum sent. He turned his nose up at all of it and looked at me the way the second mate looks at a late report. So I started baking, which is how I now find myself at four in the morning, rolling dough in a galley that rolls worse than the dough.

Last Tuesday I got one right. Golden at the edge, soft in the middle, a fat scatter of chocolate. I set it on the bench and Gordon came down the ladder one slow rung at a time, which took about a quarter of an hour. When he got his paws round it he tipped his head back and gave me that smile, as if I had personally invented the sea.

I have not been so proud of anything since your wedding cake. Tell Dad the oven is a Norwegian design that drinks gas. Tell him I am still thinking about the pub, and that Gordon sends his regards.
