Other · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo on the calf shows an Ewok in a brown hood and orange cloak, leaning on a tall staff. Beside it, a pink-red horned creature with an open mouth and a draped cape rises above the staff. Shading is soft and dark brown and black sit within the fur and cloth, with clean outlines and a plain, isolated composition against the skin.

The horned trader came up the towpath on the first grey morning of October, his cape snapping behind him like a flag nobody had agreed to. He set his crate of brass bells on the lock gate and began to sell, as if the village had sent for him and forgotten to say why.

Harrow Penn had kept the weir for forty winters, a broad brown creature in an orange hood, with an ash staff worn pale where his paw had gripped it. He watched the trader from the far bank and did not come closer. Everyone knew the bells rang only for what a buyer wanted to hear, and that they rang loudest for the lies.

A girl from the mill, Dora Kell, bought one anyway, pressing a penny into the trader's palm. She shook it, and the bell announced, clear as a church, that her brother would be home from the coast by Sunday. Harrow waited until the trader had gone round the bend, then walked down to the water and tapped his staff twice on the lock beam.

Sunday came and her brother did not. On Monday he walked up the lane with a sack of salt cod and a sheepish grin, having missed the boat and wanting someone to tell. Dora rang the bell until its clapper fell out. Harrow fished the bell from the crate, dropped it in the weir, and watched the brass turn slowly over in the brown water.
