Bigfoot walking through pine trees

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

A brown, furry Bigfoot figure strides across the centre of the design in front of a pale blue sky with small bird shapes. A broken log, a pine sprig, a grey pine cone and a green pine tree sit at the base, all outlined in bold black lines. A red and black spider and a grey skull are partly visible at the edges, with fragments of script at the top left.

The big top has been folded for three winters, but the pine backdrop still hangs at the back of the lorry, and on Sundays you drag it out to air. Nobody else will touch the costume trunk beside it. Mrs Abernathy-Pryce, who ran the show until the bank took the field, used to say the hairy fellow was the only act that never missed a date. Brown wool suit, painted face, stilts strapped to the calves, and a grey pine cone she made every child hold before the show so they would believe in him.

The council closed the field in March, and the ticket money dried up along with the rain. Now you walk him out along the edge of the empty ring, past the cracked log prop and the sawdust that still smells of resin from the sprigs you tie to the rail. The children who used to scream at him are grown and have phones of their own. You stop beneath the painted tree, where the old backdrop curls at the corners, and you tell the empty stands what she told you: that he only comes out when nobody is looking, and that he likes to be seen going home.

You fold the costume over one arm and leave the pine cone on the trunk lid, because it belongs to the next town. At the gate you stop and turn back once, the way he always did, to check that nobody has followed.
