Sloth on a branch with peacock feather
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A baby sloth with a pale face and brown fur hangs from a curving branch, its claws gripping the wood and its body shaded with reddish-brown and grey stripes. A dark peacock feather with a green and blue eye hangs from the end of the branch on the right, with a few lines of small script beside it. The shading is smooth and detailed, with colour ink used throughout on a bare skin background.

The Palais on Sunday afternoons smelled of spilt lemonade and floor polish, and the band played every waltz at half speed because the trumpeter's reed had been chewed by his landlady's terrier. You have been leaning on the rail by the fire exit for forty minutes, trying to look like a man who has simply chosen the wall. Stanley from the cloakroom catches your eye across the floor and raises one eyebrow, the way he does when a customer has been holding a ticket for too long.

Ruth arrives at quarter to four with a peacock feather tucked into her hatband. She bought it off a stall in Leeds for a shilling and has never explained why. "You look like you're holding up the wall," she says. "I'm holding up a branch," you tell her, and she laughs so hard she has to put her hand on your shoulder, which is the closest you have come to a dance all month. She insists on leading. Her feet move in slow, deliberate arcs, as if the floor were a river she has decided to cross without hurrying.
By the time the band reaches the last chord, the feather has caught on the chandelier chain and turned a full circle above you both. Nobody else notices. Stanley is counting coats. The trumpeter is searching for his reed. You have only got as far as the second step of the foxtrot, and neither of you minds in the slightest.
