Cartoon woman and candy hearts on skin

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon woman in profile with wavy blonde hair and a bald-looking top of the head marked with dots, one hand raised to her mouth. Three candy heart shapes sit beneath her, lettered in purple, pink and blue. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fill the design, against a pale skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Doreen Pilling had run the penny sweet counter at the end of Harbour Pier for thirty-one summers, and in all that time she had never let a secret leave the shop unbroken. Every bag of candy hearts she sold came with a message pressed into the sugar, and every message went round Margate faster than the tide.

The trouble started in August, when Mrs Okonedo's lad ordered a pink heart reading MEET ME BY THE BANDSTAND and forgot his pennies. Doreen stamped it anyway. Then the vicar's wife bought three purple ones, and by the Thursday the whole front had heard about the bandstand, the unpaid penny, and the purple hearts that said nothing at all, which Doreen considered the cruellest message she had ever cut.

Ruth from the chippy came in red-faced, demanding to know who had put her name on the blue heart. Doreen didn't blink. She tapped the tin. "Blue's for the truth," she said. "Nobody buys blue unless they want the whole street to know." Ruth bought four. The lettering came out crooked, with a little sugar spill across the T, and Doreen decided that was honest of it.

That night she sat with the tin on her knees and a rag in her hand, polishing the stamp. Sea wind rattled the shutter. Somebody knocked, softly, and when she opened the door there was nobody on the step but a single pink heart, unwrapped, its message already smudged by the damp: TELL ME EVERYTHING. She laughed, popped it in her mouth, and started talking.
