Jessica Rabbit with script on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A shaded tattoo of the cartoon character Jessica Rabbit, showing her head, shoulders and long hair in a three-quarter view. The figure is rendered in soft grey shading with fine dark outlines, and the lips show a faint pink tint. The name is written in black cursive script beside her, and the tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a person whose face is not shown.

Brother Anselm had spent thirty years making letters that stayed still, so when the abbot's nephew came back from the city with a folded page of a singing rabbit's wife, he held it at arm's length as if it might bite. The drawing showed a woman with hair falling like a curtain over one shoulder, eyes half lidded, a red mouth pursed around something she was not going to say. The abbot wanted it copied into the margin of the Psalter for the feast of Saint Brendan. The nephew wanted it done by Thursday.

Anselm worked by the north window with his pen cut at a fresh angle and a pot of iron-gall ink going thick in the cold. He found the hair the hardest. Every stroke wanted to curl, and every curl he laid down looked like a drowned thing in a millpond. Brother Oswin, who was nineteen and had opinions, came to watch and said the lady looked like she was waiting for a bus. Anselm told him to fetch the pumice and hold his tongue.
By vespers the outline was done, and the shading had turned the page the colour of rain on slate. Anselm sat back and found that the figure was looking at him, which was not what drawings were supposed to do. He added a single line beneath her chin, the way a scribe signs a finished leaf, and then, because the nephew had insisted, a curl of black script that named her in the careful hand of a man who expected to be sent to the cellar for it. When the abbot came to inspect the page he stood a long time, then asked only whether the rabbit would be included. Anselm said there was no rabbit, and the abbot said that was a shame, and went away whistling.
