Sailor and pin-up couple in a red heart
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of a woman with curled dark hair and red lips kissing a man in a sailor cap, framed by a large red heart with rope and flower outlines. The bold black outlines are filled with flat solid colour, mainly red, with small areas of grey shading on the hair and the man's collar. The composition is centred on the couple, with the heart behind them and leaves and blooms filling the lower and upper corners.

Dear Mags, Don't scold me for going down to the Hard again, but the Ardent Star came in on Tuesday and the whole quay smelt of tar and oranges, and there was Stan at the rail with his cap pushed back as if he'd only nipped out for a pint. He has three weeks' leave and has spent every hour of it at Nell's kitchen table, drawing.

The drawings are the work of the cook's lad, Alfie Crane, who sketches on the backs of ration tins and swears he'll be famous. Stan brought me the best one rolled up in oilcloth: a girl with her hair in a dark wave and a mouth like a poppy, and a sailor leaning in beside her, all inside a great red heart with rope curling round the edge. He wants it done on his forearm before the ship sails again, and he wants my face in it, he says, so the sea has something to look at. I told him he was soft in the head, and then I let him kiss me in front of Mr Gibbs's bicycle shed.
Now a letter has come from Ivy Pike asking whether we'll all go back to St Agnes for the reunion dinner in June. You know Ivy never forgave me for the netball final. I haven't decided. Stan says he'll come if I do, and he has promised not to wear the cap.
I'm sending this with the drawing folded inside so you can see what I mean. If you take it to the printer's in Fratton, ask him to keep the red true. Stan says red is the only colour that doesn't fade at sea. Yours, Dot.
