Castle silhouette on top of foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black castle silhouette with towers and a curved outline sits on the top of a bare foot, with the ankle and denim jeans visible above. The design is in flat black ink with no visible shading or fine linework, and the skin is pale against the green striped shoes. The tattoo is centred in the frame and fills most of the foot's top surface.

Every evening at the bottom of the valley, Maud Tarrant climbed the wall of the lower road with a pot of lamp black and a brush the length of her forearm. The castle on the hill had stood for three hundred years without once looking down at the village, and the village had returned the favour by forgetting its name. Only the shadow remembered. At sunset it stretched down the slope in a long black tongue, and the children ran through it shrieking that it would carry them up to the towers.

Maud had never liked the way the shadow ended. It stopped where the sun slid behind the ridge, leaving a curved rim of pale light all round it, like a bite taken from a bread roll. So one evening, with the sun already sinking and the bakehouse chimney smoking behind her, she traced that rim onto the wall in careful black, close as a stitch, so the castle would have something to sit inside.
The shadow noticed. It always did, once someone finally looked. It lifted its towers one at a time, shook the dust from its battlements and stepped off the hillside onto the road. Maud watched it walk past the sleeping dogs and the well, until it reached her wall and stood beside her outline. "Nobody has ever drawn my edges before," it said, and it climbed back up the hill with the light trailing behind it. The black curve stayed on the wall, and by morning the children had painted their names inside it.
