Multicoloured fish tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style fish with a blue body, outlined in dark ink, is tattooed on the side of a foot near the ankle. The body is filled with overlapping scales in pink, purple, green and yellow, with a teal tail and fins. The photo is taken indoors in soft light, with a knee, a hand with red nails and a black shoe in the frame.

Come in out of the wet, you lot, and mind the puddles by the fish stall, because the gutter here runs straight into the fishmonger's boots. Now. Did I ever tell you about Orla Pennock's blue fish? No? Then shuffle closer, for the rain's making my knees speak louder than my mouth.

Every Thursday, under the iron roof of Saltergate market, a single fish swam the cold tank beside the eel man's barrow. He was the colour of deep water at dusk, and every scale on him was a different hue, so that when the strip lights caught him he threw pink and green across the tiles like a handful of spilt sweets. The stallholders called him Mister Ferris. He never sold. The dealers offered him to the children for a penny, and he only ever stared back at them with his one gold eye.
Then came the wet spring when the river rose over the flagstones, and Orla, who sold pegs and twine and wore her father's oilskin, found the tank cracked and the fish flapping on the boards. She did not carry him to the Thames as the others said she should. She carried him home under her coat, through the rain, and set him in a washing bowl by the window.
Three days later the rain stopped, and a girl from the flats came in asking for a single scale. Orla laughed and said there was no such thing, but the fish had shed one onto the sill, bright as a sixpence. She gave it away. It is still going round this market, I'm told, and every time someone holds it up to the light, a little more of the rain goes out of the sky.
