World map outlines on both feet

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown from the front, each with a black linework outline of a world map covering the upper surface. The lines are simple and uniform, with the continents drawn as open outlines and no shading. The image is in natural colour with a pale wooden floor and a pair of black sandals at the bottom edge, and the tattoos are the only ink present.

"Hold still, or Africa comes out looking like a sock," my brother said, biro cap between his teeth, kneeling on the lino of the eleventh floor at Kestrel House while a lorry took the bend on Pell Road and rattled the window in its frame.

He had the old atlas open on the arm of the sofa, the one with the cracked spine that Mum borrowed from the school library in 1998 and never took back. He refused to trace from it. Copying goes wrong, he said, you have to remember the coastlines the way you remember a face. So he kept the shapes loose and left the sea alone, which he said was the important part anyway, the bit that holds everything apart.

It took him most of a Sunday. Mum made tea and kept asking whether it hurt, and I kept telling her it tickled, which was a lie. When he finally sat back on his heels and blew on the ink, the land looked like it had been there all along, waiting for somebody patient enough to notice it.

We moved out of Kestrel House the following spring, when the council finally got round to the lifts. The new flat is on the ground floor now, with boards that creak in the hall. Some mornings I stand in the kitchen and watch the light come through the back window, and I think about how I have walked across the whole world since then, one cold room at a time, and never once had to leave the house to do it.
