Forever Young script under a skyline triangle

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo sits on the forearm, showing a black triangle filled with a jagged skyline silhouette cut through by horizontal stripes. The words Forever Young run in handwritten script beneath the triangle. The design uses only black ink, with clean edges and open space around it against smooth skin.

Sit down, sit, the bench will hold you. You want the Halloran show, do you? Then you'll have it the way my mother gave it to me, with the lamp turned low. Every August the big top went up on the common outside Dunmore, its peak ragged against the chimneys like a town that had grown a second skyline out of canvas, and every August there were fewer lions in the ring and more patches sewn into the stripes.

The last season, old Ettie Halloran was past seventy and still walked the high wire because nobody had told her she couldn't. She had a rule for the children who crept under the flap to watch: never trust a thing that promises to last. Her brother had painted words on the flank of the caravan years before, Forever Young, in a looping hand that ran uphill as if it were late for something. By then the paint had flaked to ghosts.

On the final night the rain came in sideways and the poles began to lean. Ettie climbed anyway, one hand on the rope, and at the top she looked down across the stripes at the town lights, the crooked spires and the pub sign, and she laughed so loud the ringmaster dropped his hat. The wire held. It always held for her, and that was the trouble with it.

They struck the tent at dawn and sold the bones of it for scrap. I kept the flag, and it's in that trunk under your feet. Go on, lift the lid, mind the moth. Ettie's line is stitched along the hem, and she meant it as a joke, though she never once told me which half of it she was joking about.
