Castle silhouette with fireworks and script
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a fairytale castle with flags and spires sits at the centre of the design, with the words Keep Dreaming in black script beneath it. Small fireworks in pink and yellow surround the top of the castle, drawn in fine outline with light shading. The photograph is taken straight on, showing the inner forearm and wrist with the tattoo fully in frame.

Mavis had painted the castle eleven times before the council finally paid for a proper board, and every year she cut the spires with the same fine brush, working by lamplight in the back of the Hollow Pier storeroom. Her brother said nobody on the promenade looked at the backdrop, they looked at the fireworks. He was wrong about that, but she never told him so.

The silhouette had to be black all the way through, Mavis said, because a castle lit from behind is only ever a shape. Inside the flags there were no windows, only the sky and the sea wind. Each autumn she added one more pennant to the highest tower, a new colour for each season she had kept the pier open, until the flagpoles looked like a row of washing left out in the rain.
The year the bulbs failed, the fireworks went up late and thin, and the crowd stood in the dark wondering whether to go home. Then the pink bursts came, painted by hand onto the sky-board in fine outline, and someone at the rail read out the words beneath the castle, which Mavis had lettered in a looping script that nobody had ever read aloud before. Keep dreaming, the girl with the toffee apple read, and the whole promenade laughed and cheered as if the castle itself had told them.
Mavis packed her brushes that night and did not take them home. She left them lined up on the sill beside the board, so that whoever came next would know exactly where the spires began.
