Watercolour castle tattoo on wrist
Other · Colour · Photo
A small castle silhouette with several turrets sits on the inner wrist, with a soft, blended wash of blue, teal and violet filling its outline. Yellow and pink splashes and fine dotted rays arc above the towers, giving a light, glowing effect. The colour is loosely applied with no hard black outline, and the design is centred on the wrist against a white background.

You are sixteen the first time the Marigold Jane comes round Tuck Head at four in the morning with the nets fouled and the wind backing wrong. You are sick over the rail, and Skipper Hob laughs and tells you to look up instead. There on the headland stands the folly, seven pale turrets that no lord ever lived in, black against a sky going the colour of weak tea. Hob says it is the only thing on this coast that has never once lied about where home is.

Nan Pryce mends the nets in the loft above the fish market, and every boat that leaves Carrick Bay carries her painting on its wheelhouse door. She uses watercolour, never ink, because ink runs off in brine and wash holds. She taught you to load the brush just wet enough, to let the blue bleed into the teal, to flick the yellow and pink from the bristles so they land like spray. She said the rays were the hardest part. You have to leave them thin, or the castle looks like it is shouting.
The storm hits off the Scar at noon. You hold the paraffin lamp in the fo'c'sle while the boat stands on her nose, and you count the turrets under your breath because counting keeps your hands still. When the squall passes the water is grey and flat, and the castle is only a smudge until the sun cracks through the cloud behind it.
Hob cuts the engine off the Tuck. The rays come up gold through the wet air, and you take the little brush from your pocket and dot one last pink spark above the tallest tower. Behind you the other boats are already coming round, one by one, their doors painted with the same wet castle, all of them finding their way in by it.
