A pink castle with blue turrets sits inside a snow globe with pale clouds and a blue sky, set on an ornate gold base. Purple and white flowers with green leaves and small blue snowflakes surround the globe. Bold black outlines, soft shading and bright, saturated colour define the design, which is shown centred on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pickers had stopped for their bread when Tomas came running down the third row of Hollin's orchard with the glass ball held against his chest. Inside it, the pink castle had come unstuck from its floor and was tipping sideways through the water, its blue turrets knocking together like spoons. Old Mrs Ferrand, who had owned the globe since her wedding and had never once let anyone shake it, took it from him and turned it slowly in the sun.

The globe had come from a travelling man who sold it for a day's pick of windfalls. He said it held a winter that would never end if you kept it shut, and that the only cure was to tip it once a year so the snow fell on the castle and the castle remembered it was made for weather. Nobody believed him, but the Ferrands had kept it wrapped in a tea towel on the windowsill through forty harvests, and nothing bad had come of it.

This year the August heat had been so thick that the apples split on the branch, and the clouds painted on the glass had gone grey at the edges. Mrs Ferrand carried the globe out to the orchard gate, where the pickers stood with their baskets. She held it up and gave it one long, slow shake, and the flakes swirled white over the pink walls. Tomas watched the castle settle. Then a cool wind came down off the ridge and rattled the leaves, and every pear on the nearest tree dropped at once into the grass.

She set the globe back on the sill. 'Right,' she said, 'that's the winter sorted. Now we pick the rest before it comes.' Tomas, who had never seen snow, wiped his hands on his shorts and went back to the ladder.
