Flash design of a teal watercolour cat with gold eyes, leafy foliage, a full moon and a small silhouetted cat on a branch.

Cat and moonlit foliage design

Colour · Flash

A stylised cat peers out from the lower left of a design that blends into dense leaves, a tree branch and a large full moon above still water. A small black cat sits silhouetted on the branch beneath the moon. Soft, watercolour-like shading in teal, blue and green is accented with pink and gold on the cat's face and eyes, set on a plain white background.

Mind the third board from the door, it sings if you dance on it. Aye, that's the one. Now, the hall stood on the reed edge of Carrow Mere the summer the fiddler's girl, Ada Pym, was seventeen and too clever to be courted by anyone in the parish. The floor was new that year and nobody had nailed down the veranda rail, so the lads who wanted to show off climbed out over the water and came back wet.

The cat came with the moon. Nobody owned her. She was a grey-blue tabby with lamp-yellow eyes and a habit of sitting at the edge of the boards with her paws tucked under, watching the dancers as if she were counting them. On the night Wendell Cole walked in from the far shore, she stood up, arched her back, and padded out across the water meadow towards the willow. Ada followed, because Wendell had asked her to dance and the cat had somehow made it sound like a wager.

Up on the willow bough sat a second cat, small and black as a thumbprint. Beneath the full moon the lake lay so still that Ada could see her own face and Wendell's, and a third face looking up from the water a moment behind her own. Wendell took her hand. The fiddles stopped, though nobody had stopped playing. When Ada turned back to the hall, the lamps were out and the grey cat was sitting on the veranda rail, bold as brass, washing one paw.

Every midsummer since, the old folk say, a black cat keeps a bough over the Mere, and the moon sits on the water waiting for someone to step out to meet it. Mind the third board. It still sings.
