Cheshire Cat grin design
Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a cartoon cat head with pointed ears, a wide grin filled with triangular teeth, and a small nose. Its tail curls around the lower right in bold black stripes that taper and widen along the length. The eyes are shaded bright green while the rest of the design is solid black outline and fills on a white background.

Mabel Trusscott had lost three hens to the wood since Lammas, and the parish council had stopped pretending it was foxes. She went out at dusk with a lantern and a basket of cold mutton, because her brother swore the thing took its payment in meat. The path ran past the last stile, where the hedge gave way to bracken and the oaks stood close enough to hold the dark between them.

The first thing she saw was the tail, banded black and white, curling out of a holly bush like a question nobody had asked. Then came the grin, wide as a letter box and lined with small sharp triangles, and above it two green eyes that caught her lantern and kept it. "You're late," it said. "The hens were punctual."
She set the basket down anyway. The grin widened. It did not want mutton, it said, and it did not want her hens, which were dull and went on about the weather. It wanted her to walk the parish boundary backwards at midnight and tell the council the wood was closed for the winter, that the paths were shut and the gate was locked. "Who would believe a grocer's daughter?" Mabel asked. "Everyone," said the grin, "if you say it with enough confidence."
She did it. She walked backwards with her lantern held high and her voice steady, and the council nodded, and the wood went quiet. In the morning the stile was hung with a striped ribbon, the hedge had a new gap, and two of her hens were back in the coop, laying as if nothing had happened. Only the holly bush stayed bare, and every so often, from somewhere past the oaks, there came a sound like someone chuckling at a joke they had not yet told.
