Giraffe head silhouette design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black giraffe head and long neck are shown in profile against a white background, with ears, muzzle and eyes indicated by white negative space. The neck is broken into angular black and white patches, giving a fragmented, geometric look. The design is flat black ink with no shading or colour, and the composition is a single centred figure.

Dear Tom,

The lorry came up the lane on Tuesday with a giraffe in the back, which I didn't believe until her head rose over the hedge like a mast coming out of fog. Dad had signed for a load of hay bales, not a giraffe. The driver just shrugged and said the zoo at Ashby had gone under and somebody had to take her.
She stands in the bottom field now, where the frost lingers longest. Her coat is broken into black and white patches, like the cracked slates on the barn roof, and in the mornings the low sun comes through the hedge gaps and she looks made of pieces that don't quite meet. Mum says she's too sensible to be sad. I think she's just waiting for the weather to make sense.
Last night the wind took the top off the feed shed. I went out with the torch expecting the worst and found her at the gate with her head bent low, not looking at the storm at all but at the dark where the shed used to be. I stood beside her a long time. Her neck is so long my hand barely reached halfway up it.
I've started leaving the apples on the gatepost instead of in the bucket. She takes them very gently, the way Gran used to take tea from the saucer. Come home at Christmas if you can, and bring the big torch. I want to show you how she looks when the snow starts.
Love, Nell
