Cat and rabbit thigh tattoos in ornate frames
Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two black and grey tattoos sit on the outer thighs, one above the other, with a leather harness strap crossing the upper one. Each design sits inside an ornate scrolled frame: the upper shows a cat-like animal head beside a rose, and the lower shows a rabbit with a pocket watch and a rose over a checkerboard background. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading on the faces, petals and frame edges.

The pit winder at Harrow Shaft had stopped the cage three times that week because the rabbit would not come up. Everyone in Coldharbour knew the rabbit. It lived under the engine house in a hole lined with old sacking, and it kept a silver watch on a chain that nobody had ever seen it wind.

Mr Tennant, the overman, called it a nuisance and sent a boy down with a snare. The boy came back up with the snare sprung and no rabbit in it, only a pocket watch ticking on the wet stone. He carried it to the cottage of old Maud Penrose, who kept the cats for the mine because cats kept the rats off the candles. She turned the watch over. Its hands had stopped at twenty to six, the hour the first shift went down.
Maud took a black cat called Sable from her hearth and walked her to the shaft mouth with a saucer of milk and a rose cut from the chapel wall. She said the rabbit only kept time for men who meant to come home. Tennant laughed at her, then went down at dawn with the lamp himself, and when he came back up his face was grey and he did not laugh again.
The rabbit came up that morning, white as chalk and chequered with black, and sat on the lip of the shaft while the men climbed out one at a time. Each time a man reached the daylight the watch ticked once more. Tennant, who had never believed a word of it, took off his cap and held it against his chest. When the last man was out the watch was wound, and the rose on the chapel wall had come into bloom in the frost.
