Three mandala-style tattoos on wrists and forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three arms are held close together, each showing a black ink ornamental tattoo with radiating symmetrical patterns. The left design resembles a flower or lotus, the centre one a sun-like medallion with dotted rays, and the right one a star or diamond motif with a central circle. The linework is fine and built from dots and small marks, set against a soft, warm-toned background with a pen and notebook visible at the left edge.

Mara had drawn the same star eleven times before Oskar finally tore the page from her notebook and pushed it back across the table. "Stop trying to make it perfect," he said. "Stars aren't perfect. They're just far away and they keep going."

Outside the bus shelter on Pell Street the rain had thinned to a fine mist that clung to the streetlamps like breath. The café was emptying. Someone was stacking chairs with the slow patience of a person who wanted to go home and didn't. Mara bent over the paper again, dotting the rays one by one, because Oskar's grandmother had taught them that a line drawn fast was a line that lied.
By two o'clock they had three designs: a lotus that opened from the centre like a held breath, a sun with rays of dots spreading outward, and a star with a small circle at its heart, the kind you'd draw to mark where you had buried something. They traced them onto the back of the sheet, then onto the cheap tracing film Oskar kept in his bag, and laid the copies side by side under the lamp.
"Three of us, three shapes," Mara said. "Nobody gets to choose first."
He laughed, then stopped, because she wasn't joking. They folded the drawings into the notebook and walked out into the wet street, the lotus, the sun and the star pressed flat between the pages, waiting for morning to make them real.
