Traditional roses, cat and butterfly on legs
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two lower legs rest on a pink rose-print sheet, with bold traditional tattoos covering the shins and calves. The main motifs are red roses with green leaves, a cat head, a butterfly and smaller hearts and symbols, all with dark outlines and solid filled areas. The ink is mostly red, green, yellow and pink, and the shot is taken from above so the designs are shown straight on.

Dear Mags,

The cat came ashore on Tuesday in a fish crate, soaked to the bone and furious about it. Mr Aird at the harbour swears she jumped off the Morag Rose before she was tipped into the bay, but nobody on Skerry believes a word he says. She has a face like a pub sign, all narrowed eyes and a crooked ear, and she sits on my step as if she had been commissioned to.
The roses are doing their best against the wind. I dug the red ones out from behind the byre and put them along the wall where Dad's old fence used to stand, and the first bloom opened the morning after the ferry failed to come. I think of you when they open, the way you made me promise to write. The butterfly came in through the kitchen window last week and settled on the teapot for an hour, yellow and rust, and I did not have the heart to shoo it out.
I have not decided whether to keep the cat. She eats more than the lighthouse man ever did and has already taken the good cushion. But she waits at the gate every evening when the boat lights come round the point, and I find I wait with her.
Come in August if you can. The sea will be warm enough to frighten you, and the cat will forgive you if you bring herring.
Love, Ellen
