Cat and star within a crescent moon

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a seated cat sits on the inner curve of a large crescent moon, with its head turned to face the viewer and pale eyes picked out in white. A five-pointed star sits in the open space to the left of the cat. The design uses bold, smooth black shapes on a white background with no shading or gradients, and the composition is centred and balanced.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hassan had driven the Kessel road for nineteen years and had never once stopped for a cat. The moon hung low over the escarpment, thin as a paring, and the star beside it burned so steadily that he took it for a headlamp coming the other way. Then the cat was sitting in the middle of the tarmac, upright and unhurried, as though it had been waiting for a bus.

He braked. The trailer hissed and the dates shifted in their crates, and when the dust rolled past the windscreen the cat had moved to the verge. It sat against the pale gravel, black as spilt ink, and turned its head towards his cab. Its eyes caught the headlights and flared white, the same white as the paint on the marker posts. Hassan had a flask of sweet tea wedged by the gearstick and a delivery due at a market two days south. He switched off the engine anyway.

The night was cold enough to see his breath. He climbed down, crouched, and held out his hand, and the cat rose and walked along the edge of the road, stopping every few paces to check he was still following. It led him past the reflectors, down a slope of loose stone, to the lip of a dry wadi. At the bottom lay a minibus on its side, its roof crushed, its headlamps still glowing faintly into the sand. A man's voice came thinly from inside, counting in a language Hassan half knew.

He went down on his knees and began to pull at the door. When he looked up, the cat was sitting on the rim of the wadi, the moon curving over its shoulders like a blade laid flat, the star hanging exactly where a second lamp might have been. Later the police asked why he had stopped on that empty stretch of road. He told them about the cat. They wrote it down and did not ask again. Hassan still drives the Kessel road, and now, when the star rises over the escarpment, he slows.
