Cat in profile line design

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised cat in profile, with pointed ears, a short muzzle and three whiskers on each side of the face. A long, tapering line sweeps down from the back of the head into a curled tail, with a small crescent shape below it. The design uses solid black tapered strokes on white with no shading, so it reads as a simple stencil-style outline.

The stair has lost three steps since autumn, so you keep to the wall side and count them with your hand. At the top, the solar has no roof, only a square of grey sky and a window shaped like a pointed arch. The cat is already there, sitting on the sill as if the masons built the window around her. Nobody in Harrowgate will say her name aloud. They call her the Warden, and they leave tins of pilchards on the bottom step.

She does not look at you. Her head is turned toward the moor, the short muzzle lifted, three thin whiskers on each side fanned out against the wind. You have brought the iron key your grandmother took from the chapel, the one that fits no lock left in the castle. You hold it up. The cat's left ear twitches, the one with the notch from some old fight.

Below the window the lower ward has been a sheep pen for forty years. Past the ruined gatehouse a road runs down to the sea, and on it you can see the carrier's cart that brings the post on Thursdays. Nothing comes up here. The cat rises, stretches until her spine is one long tapering line, and steps down onto the rubble without a sound. Her tail uncurls behind her and points, like a finger, at the foot of the wall.

You kneel and scrape the moss from a flat stone. Under it is a small iron ring, and under that a door no wider than a loaf of bread. The key turns in it as if it had been waiting. When you look up, the cat is already on the threshold, glancing back once before she slips into the dark. You follow her down, and for the first time the castle feels as though it has been expecting someone.
