Tribal black cat with spiral tail
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised cat in profile, with a curled tail and a face marked by bold tribal shapes. The design is built from solid black fills, spirals and dots, with white negative space forming the linework and no grey shading. It is centred on a plain white background.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the drip from the beam, it has dripped since my grandmother's day and it will outlast the pair of us. The snow came down on Harrow Gill the winter the coaching road shut, and the inn had nine guests and one black cat called Tansy who cared for none of them. She sat on the settle with her tail wound round her feet like a rope left coiled on a deck, and she watched the door the way a magistrate watches a man who swears he was home all night.

On the third night a carter named Abel Crake knocked, half-frozen, saying his mare had gone lame two miles up and his lantern had died in the drifts. Nobody could find the road. The landlady, Mrs Ostle, lit every candle she owned and set them along the sills, and still the windows showed nothing but white. Tansy stood up. She walked to the door, flicked her tail once, and it unwound into a spiral so tight and dotted that the men by the hearth swore they saw the pattern hanging in the air like a map drawn in ink.
Nobody argued. They wrapped Abel in blankets, knotted their belts together, and followed that cat out into the storm. She went round in her curling way, never straight, always returning to the same bend of the tail, and that is how she led them past the drowned wall and the frozen beck, bringing them back at last to the lit doorway, where she sat down and washed a paw as if she had only stepped out for milk.
Abel's mare came in on its own two days later, a little wiser and nobody sure who had found it. Tansy still sits on that settle. If you look at her tail in the firelight you will see the spiral she drew of the road, and the dots are the lanterns we lit that night. Mind your cups now. Off to bed, and don't follow any cat you don't know.
