Minimalist sitting cat line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised black line drawing of a sitting cat in profile with its head turned, closed eyes, a small triangular nose and whiskers. The tail curls at the bottom left and a second sweeping line runs down the right side of the body. The design uses bold, tapered brushstroke-like lines on a plain white background with no shading.

Sit closer to the range, the lot of you, because the wind's come round to the north and it has teeth tonight. Now. You'll want to hear about Mab, the grey tom that belonged to the Pollards at Hollin Fold, the year the beck froze solid from the weir to the sheepfold gate.

Mab never once lifted a paw for the milking. He sat on the back of the settle with his tail wrapped round his feet like a bit of rope somebody had coiled and forgotten, and he kept his eyes shut, every hour of every day, as if the whole farm were a rumour he'd decided not to believe. Old Ada Pollard swore he was asleep. Her son Tom swore he was listening. Nobody ever bet against Mab being right.
Then came the morning the lambing shed caught a draught, and the ewes went wild, and the boy went up the ladder after the lamp. Mab opened one eye. Only the one. He looked at the ladder, then at the boy, then at the lamp hanging crooked on its hook, and he sighed the way a bishop sighs at a sermon going on too long. Then he stood, stretched until his spine clicked like kindling, and walked along the beams with his tail held high, not hurrying, not once looking down.
Tom came down with the lamp and a split lip. Mab went back to the settle. He never did say thank you, and he never once opened his eyes to see whether anyone was watching, which is exactly how you know a cat is pleased with himself.
