A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fishwives of Lowmarket Quay said the cat of Tallow Lane could count the lamps on the bridge and would tell you the number if you asked it nicely. Nobody asked it nicely. Mariam Dunnock asked it on the night the tide came over the cobbles and the baker's boy went missing in the reeds below the mill. She carried a dish of cold mackerel down the wet steps and set it on the bottom stair, and the cat came out from under the ferry hut with its ears flat to its skull and its whiskers pushed forward like the wires of a trap.

"Where is he?" she said.

The cat looked at her a long time. Then it turned its small head toward the water and sat down on the mackerel, which was not what a cat should do, and the lamps along the bridge went out one by one, seven, eight, nine, until only the one above the toll house was left burning.

She found the boy under the toll house steps, wedged between two barrels, cold and cross and alive. She carried him up the lane on her hip. When she came back for the cat there was only the dish, scraped clean, and a single black whisker laid across the top step like a hair left on a comb.

She kept it in an envelope in her apron pocket for the rest of her life, and on the night she died the lamp above the toll house flickered once, the way a cat's ear turns to a sound it has been waiting to hear.
