Cat face with whiskers on the lower back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A cat's face is drawn in bold black linework, with pointed ears, whiskers extending to both sides and a tribal-style pattern across the ears and chin. The eyes are filled with blue and the nose is red, while the rest of the design is solid black outline with no shading. The design is centred on smooth, lightly lit skin, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind had gone round to the north before Eilidh noticed the cat was gone from the bollard. For three winters Tansy had sat on the harbour wall of Inish Carra facing the mainland, her black coat dark against the grey stone, her two blue eyes fixed on the gap between the headlands where the mail boat came in. Nobody owned her. The islanders fed her herring heads and called it a fair trade.

Eilidh climbed the path to the post office with the sack of letters she should have sent that morning. The mail boat was due at four and it was past five. Her brother Calum had gone across on the early tide for the vet's medicine, and the sea had the flat, sulky look it wore before it turned. She found the cat under the lee of the kirk wall, sitting very straight, whiskers spread wide as a hand, staring at nothing she could see.

"You're as bad as the weather," Eilidh said, and lifted her. Tansy did not purr. She turned her head towards the water and pressed her weight against Eilidh's arm the way she did at feeding time, insistent and certain.

They reached the slipway as the first grey squall came over the point. Out past the skerry, a small red hull was rounding the rocks with its engine coughing, low in the water but moving. Calum raised one arm from the wheelhouse. Eilidh set the cat down on the wet stone, and Tansy sat facing the sea and did not move again until the boat was tied up.
