Cat face tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's face is drawn in black outline with a few shaded strokes inside the ears, large eyes, a small nose and long whiskers extending to each side. The linework is clean and even, with the shading kept sparse so the pale skin shows through the face. The design sits centrally on the inner wrist against a plain, soft-focus background of red, purple and blue fabric.

The cook had already emptied the scraps over the rail when Hester Lowe realised the cat was missing again. Tallow had a habit of vanishing the moment the watch changed, and the crew swore he could smell weather before the glass dropped. Hester went below with a lantern, past the hammocks swaying like sacks, and checked the bread locker, the rope store, and the gap behind the water casks where the rats thought themselves safe.

She found him at last on the chart table in the captain's cabin, sitting square in the middle of the Atlantic sheets, his pale face turned toward the stern window where the sky had gone the colour of wet slate. Two dark lines ran out from either side of his nose, stiff and fine as the pencil marks the mate used for bearings. His eyes were wide and unblinking. Captain Ferris was asleep in his chair with his boots on, and Hester did not want to wake him to say that a cat had been right all along.

The wind came round an hour later, hard from the west, and the brig heeled until the buckets slid across the deck. Hester held the lantern steady and watched Tallow, who did not move, who only shifted his weight so his shadow fell across the pencilled line that marked their position. When the mate came below with his dividers and a grumble, he stopped at the table and looked at the cat for a long moment.

"We're closer to the Scilly rocks than I'd like," he said. Hester nodded. Tallow yawned, showing a small pink mouth, and the mate laughed under his breath and turned the chart so the cat faced the open water. They changed course at dawn, and nobody aboard ever again asked Tallow where he had been.
