Fine line cat outline on the side of the torso

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single unshaded black outline shows a cat seen from behind, sitting upright with its ears raised and its tail curling around the base. The linework is thin and even, with small tufts drawn along the ears and back. The design sits on smooth tanned skin against a red fabric on the left, with a thin chain visible at the top right.

Sit nearer, you, and keep your hands off the cat. That's Ottilie, and she has never once turned round to face the fire. Her back is to us because her eyes are on the sluice door, and she has kept them there since the spring the Hesketh boy went out after the eels and didn't come home.

His mother came to the door every night with a lantern and a question. Did you see him, did you hear him, is he cold? Ottilie would not answer. She only sat up straighter, ears pricked toward the black water, her tail drawn tight round her feet like a rope pulled taut. The neighbours said the cat was waiting for the boy. The old fen-woman said the cat was waiting for the water to give him back, and that the water was bargaining.

One November night the lantern did not come. Instead there was a knock from inside the sluice house, soft as a paw on wood. Ottilie stood, stretched, and walked the length of the kitchen without once glancing at the noise. She sat down again, facing the wall, and her tail came round in one long curl, and the water went quiet.

In the morning the eel-traps were full and the sluice gate stood shut tight from the inside. Nobody ever found the boy, but the cat still keeps her back to us, and if you listen you can hear her purring at the door, very content, as though someone has finally come home.
