Sketched cat face on a shoulder blade
Back · Mixed · Photo
A cat's face is drawn in loose, sketchy linework with light and dark grey shading and a few stray lines extending beyond the outline. The eyes are the only areas of colour, filled in blue with touches of red, while the whiskers, ears and fur markings are in black and grey. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, with the bare shoulder and dark hair of the wearer framing it.

The herring boats came in on the Tuesday with their nets full of silver and nobody aboard looking pleased about it, because the grey tabby had gone over the side at Skerry Point and not come back. Morag Dunn said it was the cat's own choice. Cats, she said, did not belong to boats. They belonged to the stone and the peat smoke, and the sea only borrowed them.

Her son Iain did not believe that. He took the small coble out alone on the turn of the tide, pulling hard against the ebb, and he called the cat by the only name it had ever answered to, which was Scrap. The fog came down thick as wool. He could see nothing past the bow but his own hands on the oars.
Then there were the eyes. Two blue lamps sat low on the water, one a little lower than the other, with a red glint at the rim of each as though someone had struck a match behind them. He followed them the way you follow a lantern up a stair. They led him past the Black Rock and through the gap where the rigging of the wrecked Mary Ellen hung in loose lines, and on the far side the fog thinned and the harbour wall showed up grey and ordinary.
The cat was sitting on the slipway, wet to the shoulders, washing one paw as if Iain had kept her waiting. He stepped ashore and she stood, stretched, and walked up the hill towards the cottages without once looking back. The herring that week fetched more than anyone had hoped, and nobody in Skerry Point ever again called the cat a stray.
