Cat in monocle and bow tie on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A grey cat with bright green eyes wears a round monocle on a chain, a red bow tie and a white waistcoat with buttons. It sits inside an oval frame with orange and red ornamental scrollwork at the top and bottom, against a teal background. Bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and fine fur strokes define the design, which is photographed straight on against a tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ledger was wrong by one shilling and fourpence, and Mr Ambrose Vane, who had kept the books at Pellow and Strand for eleven years, could not abide a sum that refused to come out. He sat up on the high stool, polished the glass of his monocle on his waistcoat, and let it drop into place with the small click he had always thought more reliable than any clock. The office was empty except for the boy, Tom Hobday, who was pretending to sweep and watching the cat with the nervous eyes of someone who had already guessed what was coming.

Through the lens the pencil marks were plain. Someone had altered a 4 into a 9 on the Tuesday cheque, and the smudge of a thumb sat square on the margin. Mr Vane traced the chain of small deceptions back through three weeks of entries, past the coal merchant and the tea order, until he arrived at a stub of a pencil lying under the blotter. It had been Tom's, bought with his own pennies, and the shilling had gone on a pair of boots for his mother, who walked four miles to the mill each morning in her stockings.
Mr Vane did not raise the matter with the partners. He wrote a neat note in his own hand, paid the shilling and the fourpence from his own pocket, and left the book balanced for the first time in a fortnight. Then he set a saucer of cream on the corner of the desk, where Tom would see it at the end of the day. Beside it he placed a clean pen, and the monocle, which he never lent to anyone, lay dangling on its chain across the open ledger, waiting for the boy to learn how to look.
