The snow had come early to the Harrow Gap, and by the third hour Nell Garrow could no longer tell the track from the drop. The mule had stopped twice. The grey cat, Bishop, rode in the top of the pannier with his head out, the red ribbon still knotted under his chin where her sister had tied it that morning for luck, and he watched the fog as though it owed him money.

At the cairn where the old road bent left, Bishop jumped down into the drifts. Nell swore at him and reached, but he walked three steps out onto ground that looked like every other white field, then sat with his tail round his feet and looked back at her with those wide green eyes. She had crossed this pass for eleven winters. She knew the road made a shelf there, and that the shelf had slid into the ravine in the spring thaw.

She followed the cat's line, testing each step with her staff. For a moment the fog thinned to show a gap of dark air where the track should have been. Bishop waited on the far side, bored and dignified, until she reached him. Then he trotted on toward the lower lights of Tessaro, the bow bobbing like a lantern.

At the inn that night the carter asked how she had known. Nell worked the wet wool loose and looked at the cat, who was washing one paw as if the pass had never happened. She tied the ribbon back round his neck. In the morning the track lay white and unbroken, and on the highest stone of the cairn sat the same red bow, dry as paper, with snow drifted round it on every side.
