Mr Oddley had been dead a week before anyone thought to ask why the shop bell still rang at nine each morning. Sophie Parrish, who swept the pavement outside the pawnshop on Cutler Lane, saw the white rabbit first. He was squeezing past the door with a pocket watch held to his ear, muttering that he was late, late, late, and he wore a waistcoat of blue brocade that someone had clearly pressed with care.

Inside, Sophie found the counter already occupied. A cat sat on the ledger, its striped grey fur shining like wet slate, and it grinned at her from a height no cat should be able to reach. Its eyes were green as bottle glass. "You'll want to be careful with that one," it said pleasantly. "He pawned his time, you know. Very foolish. Time is not worth much in Leeds."

She had been on the till for three years and had never once been told what to do by a pussycat. She opened the ledger anyway, because the cat was waiting, and found an entry in her late employer's careful hand: one watch, redeemable, claimant unknown. Beneath it, in ink faded to lilac, a second line read: one waistcoat, one grin, deposit by Thursday.

It was Thursday. The rabbit came back at four, out of breath, and found nothing on the counter but a pile of brass buttons and a small, bright, unblinking smile hanging in the air above the ledger. Sophie reached for the watch, and the grin turned to look at her, and she understood that it was offering her the next loan.
