Cat peeking beside a quote on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the upper chest shows a cat peeking around a thin vertical line, with the quote "I am myself. That is not enough." set in a serif typeface to its left. The linework is fine and clean, with soft grey shading on the cat's face and stripes. The photo is warm in tone and centred on the tattoo, with the shoulder and a white strap visible around it.

Pemberton had been watching the greenhouse for three days before he decided the gardener was lying about the slugs. Every evening the old man came down the brick path with his tin watering can, set it on the potting bench, and told the robin that nothing in this garden was going to get away with anything. Pemberton, a grey tabby with one torn ear, took this as a challenge rather than a warning.

The trouble was the wall. Someone had built the potting shed with a corner that jutted into the lavender bed, and from the far side of it a cat could see the whole lawn without being seen. Pemberton had spent his whole life tucking his head around things like that. His sister Clementine said it was cowardice. He said it was courtesy: a cat should show the world exactly as much of himself as the world could bear.
On the fourth evening the gardener set down his can, looked straight at the corner, and said, "Come out, then. I know you're there." Pemberton did not move. He had a theory that if he stayed still long enough, the man would decide he had imagined the whole thing. The man only laughed, pulled up a crate, and sat down to wait.
They stayed like that until the light went orange over the fence. Then Pemberton stepped out, all of him, tail high, and sat on the path. The gardener nodded as though a bet had been settled. "Well," he said, "that wasn't so bad, was it?" Pemberton walked off without answering, which was the only dignity still available to him, and the robin followed him to the gate.
