Before the shutters went up on Fenner Street, Mrs Ada Holloway already had the ovens roaring and the kettle on the hob. The bakery cat, a dusky queen the bakers called Tansy, sat on the flour bin and watched the kettle as if it owed her money. Her eyes were pale blue, the old men said borrowed from a frozen pond, and she would not let anyone pour a cup until she had walked the length of the counter to inspect it.

One February the dark lasted longer than the bread. The coal cart was late, the flour had gone damp, and Ada's nephew Sam, who had come to learn the trade, burned the first tray of bloomers and sat on an upturned crate with his apron over his face. Ada did not scold him. She filled a chipped white cup with coffee so strong the spoon stood up in it and set it on the bench where Tansy could see. The cat leaned over the rim, studied the steam, then pushed her nose into the cup as though checking the coffee had been made properly.

Sam laughed for the first time that morning. "She's tasting it for you," he said. "Only because the coal man can't be trusted," Ada said, and she tipped a little saucer of milk onto the flagstones. They drank with the cat between them, and loose beans rolled from the open sack and gathered in the corner like dark buttons. By the time the window turned from black to grey, the first loaves were out and cooling on the racks.

The next morning the chalkboard by the door said only the bread count and the price of tea. Underneath, in Sam's cramped hand, he had copied one of Ada's sayings: all you need is love, and more coffee. Tansy sat on the sill and blinked at the new light.
