Teacup and saucer on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small teacup sits on a saucer, drawn in a single thin black outline. A tea bag string with a tag hangs over the rim of the cup, and the linework is clean and even. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a plain, softly blurred indoor background.

Dear Hal,

The kettle on the gatehouse hob has finally given up, so I am writing this by the light of the little window while the water heats on the camping stove. You will laugh, but the tea tin is still the same one your mother left on the sill in 1987, and the bags inside have gone soft and papery. I threw out the lot and bought a box from the Co-op in Carrick, the sort with the string and the tag, and I have been drinking them out of your grandmother's blue saucer like a duchess among the nettles.
The castle is quieter than ever. The tour parties stopped after the August storm took the rest of the west wall, and now it is only me, the jackdaws, and a man from the council who comes on Thursdays to measure cracks and says nothing. Yesterday I counted the steps of the old chapel stair. Forty-one. I used to think there were forty-two. Perhaps the stone has been wearing down while I was not looking.
Here is the thing I meant to say. The tag on the tea bag reads "Brew until you remember." I do not know who printed that, but I have been brewing for three days and I remember you at nine years old, sitting on the bottom step with a cup of water coloured brown and telling me it was builder's strength. Come up at Easter. I will keep the kettle on and make it properly. Love, Margaret
