Teacup and steam on the wrist

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A teacup sits on a saucer with a sugar cube beside it, and a curling wisp of steam rises from the cup and loops above it. The cup and cube are shaded in soft greys and blacks to give them volume, while the steam is drawn with lighter, more delicate linework. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist, photographed close-up against blue denim.

Mrs Okonedo on the fourteenth floor had a kettle that began to sing before anyone reached the landing, and everyone in Calder House knew what it meant. The good cups were out. The lift had been broken since March, so the stairs were a fair climb, but nobody minded much when there was tea waiting at the top of them.

For nine years a man called Idris Fenn came up those stairs every Thursday, a carpet seller with no family left in the city. He never took sugar in his tea. He held a single cube in his palm until the pot was poured, then dropped it in with a small click, the way other men fed coins into a meter. People on the landings said they could hear that click through the open doors and knew it was Thursday.

When the council decided to pull the block down, the residents argued in the community hall until the lights were switched off, and nothing was settled. Idris had died in the winter. The first Thursday after the meeting, Mrs Okonedo poured two cups out of habit and set one on its saucer by the window. The steam rose, thinned, and then curled back over itself in a slow loop, the way a man might turn his head to check he had been heard.

Nobody in Calder House has ever moved that cube. It is still there on the sill, hard and white, and every Thursday somebody on the fourteenth floor pours a second cup, just in case.
