Cat portrait in oval frame on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A long-haired cat with a heart-shaped tag on a red collar is shown in a scalloped oval frame topped with a heart. The cat is rendered with soft grey and brown shading, black outlines and a pink backdrop, and a black-outlined ribbon banner below the frame carries the word BIXBY. The design fills the frame of the image on a person's upper arm, with the banner at the bottom.

Dilys, who swept the platform with a broom older than the signal box, leaned on her handle and said she had seen a grey shape slip under the milk churns. Harold went down on his knees on the cold planks. He found a bootlace, two pennies and a sweet wrapper, but no cat. The bell rang for the guard. He stood up, knees cracking like kindling, and told himself a cat with a heart on its collar could not be lost for long in a town this size.

The train had been gone twelve minutes when the telegram came through the window of the box. Harold read it twice before he trusted it. ON BOARD GUARDS VAN STOP SITTING ON THE TEA URN STOP BIXBY. Calder Bridge was forty minutes up the line, and the guard, a man named Kemp who once refused a pint because he was on duty, had shared his biscuit with the animal and would not hear of putting him off.

Harold sent a reply four words long, then went to fill the kettle for the next up train. When it came in at dusk, Kemp swung down from the van with a grey bundle tucked under one arm and a look of wounded dignity on his face. Bixby leapt the last step, shook out his ruff, and walked straight back to the parcels shelf as though he had only been out to check the timetable.
